2 dead in Mesquite drug robbery; attackers remain at large

Two teenagers were shot dead in a Mesquite drug robbery Tuesday afternoon, and police are looking for two men in connection with the slayings.

Authorities received several reports of gunfire near Gus Thomasson Road and Whitson Way around 4 p.m.

Dalton James Prater, 18, of Fate was dead when officers arrived and discovered him in the driver’s seat of a red Dodge pickup. He had been shot multiple times, police said.

In a gray Nissan nearby, 19-year-old Jacob Bradley Hollett of Mesquite was found with several gunshot wounds. He was taken to a hospital, where he died.

Police believe the shooting started as a robbery when two men met with the victims under the pretense of buying drugs from them. One of the men pulled out a handgun and demanded the drugs, then shot Hollett and Prater as they tried to flee.

The robbers then drove off in a white late-model Jeep Patriot, police said.
